Why mobile-first is a booking problem, not a design trend

Over 60% of patients search on phones. Mobile-first means the booking path is designed for one thumb, not shrunk from a desktop mock.

By Tom Couture. How this was made: Mobile booking-path reviews from live practice sites.

Patients search in cars, in kitchens, in waiting rooms of other clinics. If your hours, location, and call button are not reachable with a thumb in five seconds, the next result gets the appointment.

What mobile-first actually means here

  • The first screen states who you help and how to reach you.
  • Click-to-call and click-to-maps are real links, not text.
  • Type is readable without pinching. 16px body is a start, not a stretch.
  • Forms are short and use the right keyboards (tel, email).
  • Popups do not cover the only button that matters.
  • Load is under two seconds on a mid-range phone, not on the office fiber.

Desktop can be beautiful. It should be the enlargement of a phone site that already converts — not the other way around.
